History

Just off Stonegate Road in Meanwood lie the ruins of King Alfred’s Castle. It doesn’t date back to Alfred the Great’s 9th-century reign. It was built in 1770 by a local merchant, Jeremiah Dixon.

It was marked with a plaque inscribed with ‘To the memory of Alfred the Great, the pious and magnanimous, the friend of science, virtue, law and liberty.’ It lasted until May 1946 when the final two walls collapsed.

There is a car park on site with space for around 30 cars.

Can get quite waterlogged after rain, and in some areas become boggy.
