2022 Renovations

The recent renovations have reimagined a new outdoor beer garden. Booths and benches will keep punters cosy, while a brand new street food truck area will keep people well fed.

Inside the interior has had a makeover with the additions of timber clad and tiled walls. The alcove book shelves add a more studious feel to the old pub.

Upstairs at The Pack Horse

Upstairs at the Pack Horse: a live music venue in Leeds. Showcasing local theatre, comedy collectives, grassroots, and touring bands. Part of the community since 1861.

Containing a Pool table, darts, Jukebox and seating. No TV in sight. This is for proper pubbing!

History

The Pack Horse is a Grade II listed building built during the industrial revolution. The roads in the area had previously been the responsibility of local parishes, but turned into private property, owned and maintained by turnpike trusts. With this came toll houses which used their profits to maintain the roads and develop new, more efficient road technologies. A turnpike house was built on the site of the Pack Horse site around 1800, run by the Leeds-Otley Turnpike Trust.

However not long after that, due to the introduction of the railways, goods were no longer transported by road. This meant that turnpikes fell into decline. The turnpike house was sold and turned into a public house.

While an increasing number of much-loved pubs around the country are closing down, The Pack Horse today is owned by Heineken. While the building may be owned by an international company, the Pack Horse team believe that community-led projects, run for the benefit of the people they serve with respect to our shared history, can also be sustainable and profitable.
