Hern offers a set four course menu for dinner with optional additions like a fish course or cheese course available for an extra charge.

This menu changes daily based on what fresh, seasonal ingredients the chef has available. Popular dishes featured recently include confit tomato and trout tonnato toast to start, followed by a main course of roast chicken with boudin blanc sausage, sprouting broccoli, courgette and wild garlic.

The desserts incorporate seasonal produce like rhubarb sorbets with blood orange cream and olive oil cake parfaits. The set menu structure allows the kitchen to minimise waste and make the most of the whole ingredients they source from local producers.

Hern also serves an a la carte lunch menu on Saturdays in addition to the standard dinner tasting menu the rest of the week.

The kitchen can accommodate most dietary needs including vegetarian, pescatarian and gluten free options with advance notice.

Hern offers a concise wine list focused on small, organic producers. Wines span light, refreshing options like French ‘orange’ wines to smooth, full-bodied reds from Spain. And you can BYOW – bring your own wine.

Homemade cordials and sodas provide non-alcoholic choices, including a popular rhubarb soda. Beer and other beverages are also available.

Knowledgeable staff provide excellent recommendations from the varied wine list.

Hern has an intimate, homely vibe with minimalist decor. The small space seats around 10 with wooden tables and chairs, exposed brick walls and hanging lamps.

There’s no bar area, keeping the focus on the food. The open kitchen and personable service from the chef and front of house staff add to the homely atmosphere.

Hern is located in the Chapel Allerton area of Leeds, situated on the corner of Stainbeck Lane and Harrogate Road. This vibrant suburb has an abundance of restaurants, cafes, bars and shops.

Hern is inaccessible to a wheelchair user.
