Kippax Meadows Nature Reserve is home to an eclectic range of flora and fauna, in particular butterflies and birds, but they’re not the only creatures you can see here.

Kippax Meadows is part of the Lower Aire Valley green corridor. The reserve is owned by Leeds City Council and the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.

Location

Kippax is a village south-east of the centre of Leeds.

Things to Do

Walking

The nature reserve has a readily accessible network of small paths that are ideal for taking a walk. If you’re taking a dog, you must keep them on a lead at all times when in the nature reserve.

Bird Watching

The bird watchers at Landscape Britain have spotted 55-bird species at the nature reserve. Some of the stand out birds are kestrels, red kites and common buzzards.

Butterfly Spotting

Amongst the grasslands you will spot a range of butterflies such as the common blue, meadow brown, small tortoiseshell, peacock and small skipper.

Flora

The flora biodiversity is rich and ranging in both common and notable plant species. The rarer ones include smooth tare, dewbury, common spotted orchid, southern marsh orchid and bee orchid.

History

Kippax Meadow is a site of Ecological and Geological Importance (SEGI) because it contains a tapestry of species rich grassland and scrub biodiversity.

Amenities

The nearest public toilet is a 10-minute walk up Apple Tree Lane to the Commercial pub.

Dog and rubbish waste bins are on-site.

There are lots of benches in the reserve for you to take a break on.

Food and Drink

The sandwich shop Tasty Bites is a short journey north onto Kippax high street. Grab a drink, sandwich and sweet bite here!

Parking

There is a free car park off Brigshaw Lane at Kippax Crown Green Bowls Club, LS25 7LD (Google Map Directions)

Access

The reserve has a good network of paved paths, with some suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
