Fans of quality Japanese food should go to this impressive little spot. There’s plenty of authenticity to affairs here, from the kimonos of the waitresses to the quality knife skills from the Itamae working wonders with sushi.

They were rated “Top 10 restaurant” by the Yorkshire Evening Post in 2000, “Top 100 restaurants in the UK” by the Sunday Observer in 2002, and “Top 5 restaurant” by Galaxy 105 in 2003. They were also included in “The Good Food Guide” from 2003 to 2005.

Throughout the years, Little Tokyo continues to be one of the most favourable Japanese restaurants in Yorkshire, and celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2020

There are gluten free, vegan friendly, and vegetarian friendly food options available.

The Food

The menu at Little Tokyo includes everything you would expect from a Japanese restaurant. The starters are top notch, and they do a great selection of Bento boxes. From Tofu Steak to Duck to Mango. We would recommend having a try of one of the Sushi meals!

There is an extensive selection of vegetarian and vegan options, with separate cooking equipment used to prepare these. Signature meat-free dishes include deep fried sushi, vegetarian chicken legs made from soy, vegetable yakiudon noodles, veggie tempura, and mushroom bento boxes.

Seafood also features prominently, with dishes like seafood ramen and assorted sushi containing ingredients such as prawns, mussels, fish balls, squid and octopus.

The Drink

Little Tokyo has a wide selection of drinks to accompany your meal. Soft drinks, as well as alcoholic options like beer, wine, spirits, and cocktails are available. The drinks menu features Japanese beer and spirits like Asahi lager and a range of classic cocktails. There is also a good wine list to choose from.

For non-alcoholic options, the restaurant serves a selection of organic juices and homemade soft drinks.

The Place

Little Tokyo was opened two decades ago in year 2000 as a small family run restaurant, they started eight tables. Being one of the first Japanese restaurants in Western Yorkshire, Little Tokyo became an instant hit in town, their capacity grew significantly within a year to accommodate over 100 customers upstairs and downstairs.

The interior is cosy and intimate. Diners sit on cushions surrounded by candles, fairy lights and cherry blossom trees, with the furniture made from reclaimed wood adding to the traditional Japanese aesthetic.

The cosy atmosphere manages to feel both lively yet intimate at the same time. The restaurant also features a koi pond located at the entrance.

The Location

Little Tokyo is located on Central Road in Leeds city centre, close to the Corn Exchange and Briggate. It is in a prime location for accessing public transport, with various bus routes and train stations nearby.

The restaurant is situated in a vibrant area surrounded by shops, bars, restaurants and attractions such as the First Direct Arena, Victoria Quarter and Trinity Leeds shopping centre. It is also not far from popular green spaces like Millennium Square and Park Square.

The nearest car parking is paid and at Crown Street Car Park.

Access

Access for wheelchairs and prams is very poor. Lots of steps throughout the restaurant and the toilets are up a steep flight of stairs.
