Independent

Ankave is an independent coffee and cocktail bar on Rossington Street, just off Millennium Square in Leeds city centre. The name draws from “kahve”, the historical word that carried coffee across cultures, and the venue carries that same spirit. Specialty coffee by day, intimate cocktails by night.

What sets Ankave apart is the traditional lever-operated Vostok espresso machine behind the bar, the only one of its kind in Leeds, pulling shots from Yorkshire-roasted beans.

Good place to go if you are looking for breakfast, dinner, and lunch.

There are vegetarian friendly food options available.

The Food

The food menu at Ankave leans Mediterranean and keeps things light, built around charcuterie boards, fresh-baked pastries, and focaccia sandwiches.

The charcuterie boards anchor the offering. The classic board arrives loaded with cured meats, sliced cheese, nuts, jam, chutney, passion fruit, grapes, and apple. All arranged on a wooden serving board. A vegetarian version swaps out the meats while keeping the generous spread. Larger boards serve up to four, making them a natural fit for sharing over evening cocktails.

For something more substantial, the Prosciutto Focaccia layers Italian prosciutto with rocket, mozzarella, and sundried tomatoes in olive oil focaccia. The Caprese Focaccia offers a lighter vegetarian option, while the Salmon Bagel and Mediterranean Veg Bagel round out the sandwich selection.

Mornings bring a solid pastry lineup. Butter croissants, chocolate croissants, pistachio croissants, pain au chocolat, pecan plaits, and savoury options including cottage cheese and raisin pie and cheese filo pie. A coffee-and-pastry combo deal makes for a quick, satisfying start to the day.

When the bar shifts to evening mode, a selection of bar snacks takes over: bruschetta, giardiniera, green olives, and prosciutto sticks — all designed to pair with cocktails and wine.

The Drink

Coffee is the centrepiece. The Vostok lever machine produces a full espresso-based menu from straight espresso and cortado through to Spanish latte with condensed milk and steamed milk, dirty chai latte with chai syrup and double espresso, and ceremonial-grade matcha lattes. Hot chocolate uses melted chocolate flakes rather than powder. Iced coffee and a selection of iced teas, English Breakfast, Green, Peppermint, Earl Grey, Chamomile cover the warmer months.

Come evening, the coffee-based cocktail menu takes centre stage. The Espresso Martini pairs freshly brewed espresso with premium vodka and coffee liqueur. The Carajillo combines double espresso with Licor 43, served hot or over ice. A Coffee Old Fashioned brings together bourbon, coffee liqueur, sugar syrup, and bitters with an orange garnish, while the Coffee Negroni blends coffee liqueur with gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth. A Matcha Martini rounds out the signature list.

The Place

Ankave occupies a ground-floor unit with a full-width floor-to-ceiling glazed shopfront, gold lettering across the glass, and a circular illuminated badge logo visible from the street. Inside, the space splits into two distinct zones. To the left, a darker lounge area features diamond-tufted high-backed banquette booths in tan leather alongside deep cream upholstered armchairs, with dark wood tray tables between them. To the right, the bar glows with amber-undelighted floating wooden shelves displaying a curated bottle collection, the visual centrepiece of the room.

A rough stone-cladded feature wall in cream and grey textured tiles runs behind the seating area. Exposed industrial circular ductwork stretches across the ceiling, while cube-shaped black-frame wall sconces and Edison-style pendant bulbs at varied heights provide warm, layered lighting. A large tropical plant and a bookshelf stocked with well-thumbed volumes soften the industrial edges.

During the day, natural light floods through the large windows, with window seats offering views across to the classical civic buildings of Millennium Square. Small flower vases sit on tables. By evening, the atmosphere shifts entirely. Backlit shelving casts a warm honey glow, red votive candles flicker on each table, and the space takes on an intimate, moody quality. Monday Sessions bring live classic rock and power ballad playlists from early evening, drawing an after-work crowd. A student discount applies across the full menu.
