Urban Hives - Bees in Leeds

A loverly little ad break! Continue reading below.

Throughout Leeds, our city’s rooftops are abuzz with activity, and it’s not just trendy bars and terraces.

A new group of residents has moved in high above the office desks, apartments, and hotel rooms, and they’re buzzing to be here: honey bees, thanks to a family-run business Urban Hives who are on a mission to boost biodiversity and turn Leeds green.

The fast-paced urbanisation of Leeds has resulted in it being ranked as the 5th least green city in the UK. However, the concern for nature and sustainability is driving positive change. Bees play a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity, enriching the land and supporting nature.

Mitchell, a bee enthusiast in Leeds, shares his passion for bees, influenced by his father-in-law who was a beekeeper. He even involves his 6-year-old daughter, who wears a bee suit to help with the hives in their garden.

As a family, we are so passionate about bees and love that we are making an impact on the environment and supporting the ‘save the bees’ movement.

says Mitchell.

Beyond their environmental significance, bees are also important for our economy and food system. With 75% of global food crops relying on pollinators like bees, their decline poses a significant threat to our food security. By creating a habitat for bees on rooftops, businesses and communities in Leeds are actively contributing to the health of the city and supporting the “save the bees” movement.

Bees in Leeds. Introducing to the city

The presence of bees on rooftops not only benefits the environment but also serves as a unique selling point for businesses, showcasing their dedication to sustainable practices and appealing to the values of younger generations. 46% of young people want their company to demonstrate a commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance. As Millennials will make up 75% of our workforce by 2025, it has never been more important for employers to appeal to this demographic.

The impact of bees goes beyond honey production. Bees are diligent workers, tirelessly pollinating flowers and crops, contributing to the overall health and biodiversity of the ecosystem. Their presence on rooftops brings a positive change to the city, creating a greener and more vibrant environment for all to enjoy.

This time of year is perfect for putting new hives on your business rooftop. If you don’t have a rooftop to spare but still want to get involved, the family-run business also offers a “Sponsor a School Hive” program, engaging with the community and spreading awareness about the importance of bees.

As more businesses and communities join the movement, the buzz around bees in Leeds continues to grow. It’s a powerful reminder of the important role that these tiny creatures play in our world and how our actions can make a difference in creating a more sustainable and vibrant future for our cities.
