Leeds has a selection of outdoor moorland that can be found in nature reserves and unsurprisingly on the moors. Moorlands can cover huge areas across open and wide landscapes; and are usually covered by heather (heathland) that are dry enough to walk over.
The outdoor moorland turns the bleak winter landscape into a patchwork of rich purples by late summer, most moorlands are managed as part of agricultural holdings or shooting estates. Moorland areas contain dwarf-shrub species such as crowberry, cowberry, bilberry, and heathers are the distinctive flora that stands out. Wetter areas are generally less heathery in appearance and stand out with greener shades of grass and rush.
