The Location

History
The Skyrack ‘wapentake’ takes its name from a large oak that grew for centuries in Headingley. Ye Old English saying of “scir ac” meant Shire Oak of which the Viking for meeting place was “Skyr-ak”. Many a meeting took place beneath the Shire Oak. This tradition is said to have come from the Vikings.
At these ‘wapentakes’ the locals would make important decisions around pressing issues. As they voted they would raise their weapon into the sky to motion. Hence the literal breakdown of “Weapon Take”.
The tree fell in 1941 in bad weather. There is a plaque to commemorate it outside the Original Oak Pub.
