The Scarbrough Hotel is a Grade II listed pub on Bishopgate Street, directly beside the stepped entrance to Leeds City Station.

Part of the Nicholson’s estate — purveyors of British heritage pubs since 1873 — the pub occupies a distinctive Victorian building with an ornate tiled frontage dating from 1922. Self-described cask ale masters with a gin palace to match, The Scarbrough Hotel pairs its rotating real ales with hearty British pub food, anchored by a pie collection that has earned gold at the British Pie Awards. Ranked number three of 123 bars and pubs in Leeds on TripAdvisor and a Travellers’ Choice 2025 winner, this is a pub with serious pedigree.

The Food

The pie collection sits at the heart of the menu. Each pie arrives with buttery mashed potato, thyme roasted carrots and rich gravy — a proper British plateful. The British Steak and Nicholson’s Pale Ale Pie leads the range, with blade of beef braised in the house ale and a gold award from the British Pie Awards to its name. The Beef Rib, Shin and Brisket Pie offers a rich red wine sauce beneath light pastry, while the Chicken, Leek and Tarragon Pie takes a creamy white wine route. A Fish Pie combines cod, salmon and king prawns in white wine sauce, and the Mushroom and Spinach Suet Pie comes in both vegetarian and vegan versions.

Beyond pies, the Nicholson’s Fish and Chips features hand-battered haddock dipped in the house Pale Ale, served with chunky chips and mushy peas. The chargrilled sirloin steak is 21-day aged and served with watercress and chunky chips, and the Chargrilled Chicken and Chorizo comes with long-stem broccoli and sauteed baby potatoes. For something lighter, Nourish Bowls pair kale, brown rice and quinoa with a choice of chicken, halloumi or smoked salmon.

Bar snacks run from Sticky Chicken with sweet chilli and Som Tam dressing to Lightly Dusted Calamari, Halloumi Fries, Padron Peppers and Loaded Chunky Chips topped with pulled beef brisket and mature Cheddar. Vegetarian and vegan options are clearly marked across every section of the menu.

The Drink

Cask ale defines The Scarbrough Hotel. The rotating range draws from independent specialist breweries, with Nicholson’s Pale Ale — brewed by St Austell Brewery in Cornwall — serving as the house pour. It also doubles as the braising liquid in the signature pie and the batter for the fish and chips. The cask selection shifts regularly, so asking the bar team for the current lineup is part of the ritual.

The gin offering earns the pub its “gin palace” reputation. The menu is organised by flavour profile — juniper-heavy pours like Tanqueray London Dry and Sipsmith alongside the house Nicholson Gin, a family-run London Dry with roots tracing to the pub chain’s founder William Nicholson in 1873. Lighter citrus options include Tanqueray Flor de Sevilla and Tarquin’s Cornish, while Hendrick’s and Monkey 47 represent the modern and distinctive end.

Whisky drinkers find an extensive range spanning Scotch single malts — Laphroaig 10, Glenfiddich 12, Lagavulin 16 — through to bourbons like Woodford Reserve and Buffalo Trace. A full cocktail menu covers classics from Espresso Martini and Negroni to an Old Fashioned built on Buffalo Trace.

For those not drinking alcohol, Athletic Run Wild IPA, Peroni 0.0%, Guinness 0.0% and Lucky Saint 0.5% Lager cover the beer side. Alcohol-free cocktails include the Amalfi Spritz with Lyre’s Italian Spritz and Fever-Tree White Grape and Apricot soda. Fentiman’s Rose Lemonade and Ginger Beer, fresh fruit juices and signature soft drinks round out the selection.

The Place

The exterior makes the first impression — rich, dark burgundy and terracotta Victorian decorative tiles cover the entire ground floor frontage, framed by honey-toned wooden window and door frames and topped with gold “Scarbrough Hotel” lettering on a warm cream fascia. A “Saloon Bar” sign still marks the right-hand entrance, and a traditional gas lamp fitting hangs above the door. Trailing ivy spills over the rooftop parapet, softening the building’s presence from above.

Inside, the standout feature is a log-slice wall: stacked end-grain cross-sections of wood arranged floor to ceiling with fairy lights woven through the gaps, casting a warm amber glow across the bar area. Warm globe pendant lamps hang overhead, and decorative Victorian wallpaper lines the walls — the overall palette is dark, intimate and golden. Cut crystal tumblers sit on the bar top, and TV screens carry live sport on match days, shifting the atmosphere from cosy and intimate to buzzy and convivial.

A pavement terrace outside offers bistro-style tables and chairs on Bishopgate Street, enclosed by branded barriers — a prime spot for watching the world pass by steps from the station entrance.

The Location

The Scarbrough Hotel sits on Bishopgate Street, directly beside the stepped entrance to Leeds City Station — making it one of the most convenient pubs in the city for anyone arriving or departing by train. Neville Street and Boar Lane are a short walk away, connecting the pub to the wider city centre shopping and nightlife areas.
