Munch Cafe English Kitchen is a dual-concept neighbourhood cafe on The Parade, North Lane in Headingley.
By day, the kitchen turns out hearty English breakfasts and lunchtime classics. Come evening, Tuesday through Saturday, the menu switches entirely to authentic South Indian vegetarian dishes — dosas, idly, vada, and aromatic filter coffee. It is a setup that has kept Headingley regulars coming back for over fifteen years, blending two distinct culinary traditions under one bright blue shopfront.
There are gluten free, vegan friendly, and vegetarian friendly food options available.

The Food
The daytime menu centres on generous, no-nonsense breakfasts. The Big Munch is the signature plate — three bacon rashers, three sausages, two fried eggs and two golden hash browns — while the Full English pairs bacon, sausages and a hash brown with toast. Wraps are a popular option, particularly the Big Breakfast Wrap stuffed with sausages, crispy bacon, scrambled egg and melted cheese in a warm tortilla. Vegetarian diners can opt for the Big Veggie Breakfast with veggie sausages, fried eggs, hash browns, mushrooms and beans, or a lighter Big Veggie Wrap. Jacket potatoes with fillings such as chicken tikka, tuna mayo and cheese and bacon round out the lunchtime offering.
The evening transformation brings an entirely vegetarian and vegan South Indian menu. Masala dosa — a spiced potato-filled rice crepe served with lentil sambar and two chutneys — is the standout, alongside ghee dosa, rich and butter-infused, and the soft, spongy kal dosa. Uthappam offers a thicker, fluffier crepe topped with onions and green chilli, while plain idly — steamed rice cakes with sambar and chutney — is a South Indian breakfast classic reimagined for the evening sitting. Crispy paniyaram, tempered rice and lentil dumplings with a crunchy exterior and soft centre, and sambar vada, lentil doughnuts soaked in tangy aromatic sambar, complete a menu rooted in tradition. On Fridays and Saturdays, podi thattu idly — thick steamed idly topped with ghee-spiced lentil powder — makes a limited appearance.

The Drink
Munch Cafe operates an entirely non-alcoholic drinks offering across both menus. South Indian filter coffee is the highlight — strong, aromatic and brewed with a traditional filter to produce a hot, sweet, frothy cup. The full coffee menu runs from espresso and americano through to flat whites, lattes and mochas, with chilled coffee options available during the day.
Chai is another strength. Masala chai blends cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, black pepper and clove with milk, while the spiced chai latte and vanilla chai latte offer a creamier take. From the South Indian cold drinks selection, nannari sarbath — a cooling drink made from nannari plant root with lemon — sits alongside Indian sweet lassi and rose milk.
A full range of teas includes earl grey, green, mint, peppermint and chamomile, plus an apple beetroot and blueberry blend. Soft drinks cover the usual suspects alongside Frooti and Maaza mango drinks.
The Place
The bright blue shopfront with “munch cafe” in white lettering is one of the most distinctive facades on North Lane — you spot it before you reach it. Inside, a large circular yellow pendant lamp hangs from the ceiling, setting the tone for a space that is unfussy and welcoming. Light-coloured walls are accented with a teal-green feature wall behind the window seating, where tables look out onto the street through the full-width frontage.
Floating wooden shelves hold a small potted plant, a decorative bicycle ornament and date-cube display blocks, while digital screens on the walls cycle through community stories and local causes — a reflection of the owner’s community-minded approach to running the cafe. The service counter sits at the back, with staff working in view. Furniture is casual and unpretentious — this is a neighbourhood spot built for regulars, not a design showcase. Dogs are welcome, with the cafe actively encouraging four-legged visitors.
