The Food

The menu centres on three pillars: mezze starters, charcoal grills and manakish — the Lebanese flatbreads that set Lebanese Bites apart from a standard kebab shop.

Mezze opens with the classics — hummus, mutabbal (smoky grilled aubergine blended with lemon, garlic and sesame sauce), tabbouleh, and fattoush scattered with sumac and shards of roasted bread. Warak enab (vine leaves stuffed with parsley and rice) and crisp falafel round out a strong vegan selection, while batata harra — spicy fried potatoes with coriander and mixed pepper — adds a punchy side dish you rarely see on UK menus.

The grill section runs from shawarma chicken and lamb through shish tawook, lahem meshwi (marinated lamb cubes) and minced-lamb kofta, all served as meals with bread, hummus, salad and chips. The mix grill meal brings all three together on one plate. A dedicated vegetarian mix meal pairs falafel, grilled halloumi, vine leaves and aubergine.

Manakish deserve special attention. Zaatar flatbread — topped with thyme, sumac, sesame and olive oil — is the simplest and one of the most satisfying options. Lahm bi ajeen layers ground lamb with tomato, onion and seven spices, while the muammar combines red pepper, onion, walnuts and tahini for a rich vegan alternative. Wraps offer a quick grab-and-go format, from shawarma chicken to falafel with sesame and pickles.

Baklava closes the menu as the sole traditional Lebanese dessert.

The Drink

Lebanese Bites is a halal operation and does not serve alcohol. The drinks list is entirely soft drinks — canned Coke, Pepsi, Fanta, 7Up and Tango alongside Rubicon Guava, Rubicon Mango and Rio Tropical, choices well-matched to the menu’s Middle Eastern flavours. Still water is also available.

The Place

Lebanese Bites occupies a compact ground-floor unit in a red-brick Victorian terrace row on Woodhouse Lane. A white scalloped awning stretches across the frontage, above a bold red sign reading “Grill | Shawerma | Falafel | Manakish | Pizza” with Arabic script alongside. A blue neon “OPEN” sign glows in the window during trading hours.

Inside, the space is small and functional — light wood laminate flooring, plain cream walls and a handful of black padded bar stools along the front counter for perching rather than sitting down to a full meal. Two large illuminated menu boards line the rear wall, and a pair of warm Edison pendant bulbs cast an amber glow overhead. The open kitchen is visible behind the service counter, where stainless steel prep surfaces and a grill sit alongside a deli display of hummus, tabbouleh and colourful pickled vegetables.

The atmosphere is fast, unpretentious and community-facing — busy with the university lunch crowd by day and the late-night student trade after dark.

The Location

Lebanese Bites sits on Woodhouse Lane in the Woodhouse area of Leeds, on the busy arterial route connecting the University of Leeds campus to the city centre. Leeds General Infirmary is a short walk away, and the surrounding streets carry heavy student footfall throughout the day and into the evening.
