The name says it all. A kalabash is a Caribbean vessel — a hollowed-out fruit shell, dried and shaped into a bowl. Something simple, functional, made to carry something nourishing. That same philosophy runs through this family-run diner on Chapeltown Road.
Kalabash has been serving traditional Caribbean food from family recipes for over a decade, and the Chapeltown Enterprise Centre location gives it a permanent home in the heart of one of Leeds’ most vibrant multicultural communities.
The kitchen focuses on what it does well: generous plates of home-cooked Caribbean food at prices that keep regulars coming back.
Good place to go if you are looking for dinner and lunch.
There are halal food options available.

Take a look around
The Food
The menu reads like a tour of Caribbean home cooking, built around recipes passed down through generations. Jerk chicken leads the way — marinated in a blend of spices and slow-cooked until the flavour runs deep. It is the signature dish for good reason.
Oxtail stew, rich and falling apart, sits alongside curry goat simmered until tender and brown stew chicken in a savoury gravy. Mutton curry and BBQ wings round out the meat selection, each dish arriving in portions that leave little room for complaint about value.
Seafood options include roast fish, steam fish, and lobster Creole for those looking beyond the land-based menu. On the plant-based side, plantain curry and a vegan chickpea stew hold their own as standalone dishes rather than afterthoughts, and fried plantain — sweet, golden, caramelised at the edges — works as a side or a snack on its own.
Rice and peas and fried dumplings accompany most plates, completing the kind of meal that rewards an empty stomach. The cooking here is not about reinvention or fusion. It is about doing the classics properly, with the care and consistency that comes from family tradition. Halal-certified across all meat categories.

The Drink
Rum punch and ginger beer are the confirmed staples — the rum punch carrying that familiar sweetness and kick, the ginger beer offering a sharp, spiced alternative. Beyond these, the drinks offering is modest and straightforward, in keeping with the diner’s no-fuss approach.
Soft drinks are available to round out the selection. The focus at Kalabash has always been on the food rather than an elaborate drinks menu, and the pricing reflects the same affordable ethos that runs through everything here.
The Place
Step inside and the space tells you exactly what to expect: a small, compact dining room where the food does the talking. Straight-backed wooden chairs in light natural wood sit around plain rectangular tables — no tablecloths, no fuss. Cream-painted walls are hung with framed pictures in various sizes, giving the room a homey, community-kitchen feel rather than anything designed to impress.
Lighting is bright and functional, with natural light pouring through the large front windows during the day. There is no mood lighting, no candles, no Instagram staging. The aesthetic is classic neighbourhood diner — clean, unpretentious, and entirely focused on what arrives on the plate.
From the outside, Kalabash announces itself with a bold black shopfront, green and yellow lettering, and a fascia that reads “Authentic Caribbean Food Bakery Cafe Diner.” Large glass doors and picture windows open onto the Chapeltown Enterprise Centre terrace. Outside seating is available when the weather allows.
The Location
Kalabash sits on Chapeltown Road, the main artery running north through Chapeltown, roughly a mile from Leeds city centre. The area has long been associated with Leeds’ West Indian community and is home to the Leeds West Indian Carnival. Bus routes 2, 3, 3A, 36, and 48 run directly along Chapeltown Road, making it straightforward to reach without a car. Street parking is available on and around the road, though spaces can be limited.
