The Food

The kitchen centres on house-baked goods — a glass counter greets you with the day’s selection of cake slices, traybakes, brownies, cupcakes, and cookies. Named varieties include black forest brownie and honeycomb crunch, with vegan brownies also available. Giant cookies offer a step up from the regular size for those with a serious sweet tooth.

On the savoury side, toast comes on a choice of white, granary, gluten-free white, or multi-seed bread, topped with butter, jam, marmite, or peanut butter. Cheese scones and toasted teacakes arrive with butter or a free-from spread. Hummus and pitta bread rounds out the lighter options — a simple, affordable menu built around comfort rather than complexity.

For younger visitors, a teddy bear’s picnic brings together a sandwich, crisps, biscuits, carrots, and yogurt in one child-friendly package.

The Drink

Coffee sits at the heart of the menu, with espresso-based options spanning americano, flat white, cappuccino with chocolate, latte, and mocha. Cafetiere coffee offers a slower alternative, while a free babyccino keeps the youngest visitors happy.

Tea drinkers choose between Yorkshire Tea and a generous range of speciality and fruit options — Earl Grey, green tea, and red bush alongside blackberry and raspberry, peppermint, lemon and ginger, sweet rhubarb, and mandarin and ginger.

Hot chocolate comes in white or milk, with the option to upgrade to “with added Sunshine” — topped with cream and marshmallows. Cold drinks include Cawston Press apple juice and elderflower, San Pellegrino in three flavours, bottled water, and glasses of milk, orange juice, or apple juice. The menu is entirely non-alcoholic.

The Place

Floor-to-ceiling glass frames the shopfront, with colourful triangular bunting and a chalkboard A-frame sign reading “where a cup of coffee means everything” marking the entrance. Inside, the main café area pairs light wood bistro-style tables and chairs with white walls hung with colourful framed artwork and prints. More bunting stretches across the ceiling, while recessed downlights keep the space bright and airy. A motivational quote on the wall — “Everyone you meet is fighting something… be kind” — sets the tone.

A separate side room offers a cosier feel, with dark leather sofas, yellow and blue cushions, a low wooden coffee table, and blue and cream paper lantern pendant lights overhead. Floating shelves display artwork and local maker products, and the room doubles as an event space for book signings and community gatherings.

A kids’ play area sits within the venue, and the café offers a 10% NUS discount for students. Wheelchair-accessible entrance is confirmed.

The Location

21 Co. sits within Headingley Central on Otley Road, the main retail and leisure hub of Headingley in north-west Leeds. The café is well served by frequent buses on the A660 corridor into the city centre.
