Location

Burley Park runs alongside Cardigan Road and Burley Road. It’s “main” entrance, however, is situated on Cardigan Lane, overlooked by Winners’ Chapel, a former Methodist Sunday School and Church Hall.

It’s a relatively small park blessed with lots of mature trees, partly built on a hill, and provides a great cut through to various places because of its many entrances. Burley Bottom Park (Burley Village Green) is also very close and can be accessed via a passage off Cardigan Lane.

Things to Do

Cricket

There is one all weather cricket pitch in the northern end of the park near the Park View Road entrance. At 22 yards the wicket is full sized and ideal for a group to get a game going.

Bowling

The crown green bowling pitch is located next to the cricket pitch at the top end of Burley Park. It is well maintained and used by the friendly Burley Park Bowling Club. If you want to give this a go you can turn up and try.

Tennis

Burley Park has 2 hard tennis courts that are in a acceptable playing condition. There is no requirement to book in advance. Anyone can play on the courts – just turn up and play!

Basketball

The basketball court is full sized and enclosed by a chain fence. Each hoop is netted. This isn’t a multi-use-games-area, so the floor markings are specifically for basketball.

Football

If you fancy a kick about there is a small 7-a-side pitch at the bottom end of the park. It’s a grass pitch with two fixed goal posts.

Outdoor Gym

Fixed outdoor gym equipment is dotted on the square route pathway around the cricket, basketball and bowls pitches at the northern end of the park.

The outdoor gym has pull up bars, parallel bars and other outdoor fitness gear.

Running

If you are into running, the 1km Burley Park Run Route is a great running circuit that can be run as little or as much as you want. A perfect route for anyone starting a couch to 5km training plan.

Ball Games

The wide open green spaces within Burley Park are ideal spots to bring the balls and games for some fun. You might want to throw a frisbee or kick a ball. The green areas around the playground are perfect for this!

Playground

The colourful playground is hard to miss at the centre of the park. It comes with the usual play equipment including climbing frames, slides, swings, roundabouts and rocking horses.

Have a Picnic

You’ll often see groups of people relaxing in the summer in various sections of the park, enjoying the space with friends and tucking into a picnic. There’s a supermarket on Burley Road, – a short walk away over the railway bridge. Well recommended space to stop and enjoy the sun.

Pick from the Orchard

Pick seasonal fruit from the well-kept community gardens and orchards. Note. Currently, this section of the park is temporarily closed.

Dog Walking

The park attracts many dog walkers as it’s one of the largest open spaces in the area with fairly enclosed entrances and exits and plenty of bins for dog waste. Burley Park is a good space for dogs with little legs to potter around on the lead, but there’s also enough space to play a bit of fetch!

History

In 1899, Leeds Corporation purchased the 14.5 acres of land to provide recreational facilities for the ever increasing population around Burley and the park was originally constructed with a sandpit, play equipment, a cricket pitch, and bowling green. It was then opened to the public on 8th September 1900.

Amenities

There are no toilet facilities at the park, but it is a short walk to Kirkstall road where there are a number of venues with toilets. There are plenty of bins on site for both general and dog waste.

While there’s no car park, there is plenty of on-street parking available on Cardigan Lane and Park View Road.

Food and Drink

The park is also lacking a café on its doorstep. However, it’s just a short walk to Kirkstall Road where you should check out Poco for some Italian coffee and Sicilian street food. Harpos Pizza and Amigo’s Mexican Food are two of the highest rated takeaways in the area. There are also various food options on Cardigan Road with the likes of Dukes Donuts & Coffee and Man v Roast.

Parking

There is no dedicated parking for Burley Park, however the park is positioned between two residential roads. Both with on-road parking.

We would recommend Park View road, just off of Cardigan Lane. Postcode LS4 2LG (Google Map link).

Access

Burley Park is very accessible. With large paths, it is a great location for those with wheelchairs and pushchairs. The grassy areas are also well maintained, so should also be accessible when the weather is good.  Bikes are also allowed at Burley Park.

How to Get To Burley Park

Google Map Directions

Train tracks from Burley Station (0.5 miles away) separate the park from Cardigan Road with multiple pedestrian bridges providing access. The closest bus stops to the park are Burley Road Cardigan Lane (49, 50, 50A) and Cardigan Road Harold Grove (19, 19A), just a few minutes walk away.
